Nashville, Tenn. – The Women’s Political Collaborative of Tennessee will host a special event honoring Black History Month on Saturday, February 18, 2017, 11:30 a.m.
Rep. Stacey Y. Abrams, House Minority Leader for the Georgia General Assembly and State Representative for the 89th House District, will be the guest speaker. Abrams is the first woman to lead either party in the Georgia General Assembly and is the first African-American to lead in the House of Representatives.
A graduate of Spelman College where she was named a Harry S. Truman Scholar, Abrams went on to receive a master’s degree from the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin, and a juris doctor degree from Yale Law School. Rep. Abrams worked as a tax attorney in Atlanta before being appointed deputy city attorney for the city of Atlanta. In 2012, Abrams received the prestigious John F. Kennedy New Frontier Award and has been recognized nationally as one of the 2014 Public Officials of the Year by GOVERNING magazine. In April 2014, she received the inaugural Gabrielle Giffords Rising Star Award from EMILY’s List.
“We are honored to have Rep. Abrams join us for this special luncheon event,” said WPCTN President Nancy Corley. “The goal of our organization is the equal participation of all women in politics. More and more women, like Rep. Abrams, have broken down barriers and we want to encourage more women to continue down the path that so many women before us have paved.”
The February Luncheon will be held on February 18, 2017 at the John Seigenthaler Center in Nashville. The program begins at 11:30a.m. with a reception to follow. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased online at www.wpctn.com.
