Outreach
The Women’s Political Collaborative of Tennessee has created a program for college and high school women to learn about the political process and how they can take part.
For College Students
We held our first GET ACTIVE! Conference on October 13, 2010, at the Nashville Children’s Theater. Diverse speakers from the community addressed attendees:
- Supporting Your Beliefs – Joyce Searcy, Director of Community Relations, Belmont University
- Information: The Source, The Accuracy, The Implications – Beth Fortune of Vanderbilt University and Tam Gordon, Special Assistant to Mayor Karl Dean
- Panel Discussion: What To Do and Not Do in Advocating for Your Position
- Action Comes with Commitment – Page Pitts, Entrepreneur
A reception celebrating the first day of early voting followed.
For High School Students
The Women’s Political Collaborative will send local leaders to your classroom to speak on various topics of political and governmental interests. These speaking events are designed to encourage students to become actively involved in the political process through discussions with community leaders and public servants. This is a tremendous opportunity to increase students’ knowledge on local, state and national issues.
Benefits to students:
- Increases their knowledge on local, state and national issues
- Encourages students to register to vote
- Illustrates the various professional opportunities that are available in public service and political arena
- Persuades students to join political clubs sponsored by their school (Young Democrats, Young Republicans, etc.)
