Bringing the Political Process to the Classroom
Our organization’s goals include encouraging students to become actively involved in the political process through discussions with community leaders and public servants, and developing and strengthening the relationship between the WPC and Metro Nashville Public School students. To accomplish this, we created the GET ACTIVE program (click here to learn more).
McGavock High School – April 25, 2011
Criminal Justice Panel at McGavock – Mr. Bradley Tracy – 10th-12th grade classes
Panel Members: Magistrate – Sophia Crawford, Public Defender – Dawn Deaner, District Attorney – Melinda Rigsby
We presented a criminal justice panel to high school students in Mr. Bradley Tracy’s class at McGavock High School. The panel shared their experience and insights within the judicial system, then the students posed thought-provoking questions to the panel. It was an educational morning and the WPC has been invited back to present another discussion in the 2011-2012 school term.
MLK Middle Magnet School – May 19, 2011
History Day at MLK – Ms. Flakes and Ms. Mullins – 8th and 10th grade classes
Speakers: Leo Waters – former Councilman, Pat Nolan – Political Analyst, Joann North – former Councilman and Davidson County Property Tax Assessor, Howard Gentry – former Councilman and Vice Mayor, Lora Fox – Metro Legal
WPC presented a day-long speaker series to 8th and 10th grade students on issues ranging from voter registration, the history of metropolitan Nashville government, involvement in the community and politics and potential career goals. The speakers communicated with the students in a casual classroom setting. The students were encouraged to ask questions and think about how they could positively impact their community now and in the future.
It was very successful and many thanks go to Dianne Neal – WPC Community Outreach Board Member, for her coordinating the speakers and schedules for both events. We plan to continue this program in the coming school term. Your participation is appreciated!
